Ethical investing means a lot of different things to everything. It’s a complex concept and one that comes with a lot of emotions and concerns.

So I thought I’d provide a guide to help start your own journey into ESG or ethical investing.

  • The first consideration is your own principles and ideals. Ethical investing incorporates your personal values with your financial goals. It’s meant to be a refection of you as a person, and how you want to interact with the world around you.
  • Second consider how those values translate into themes. Are you concerned about the environment? Are you invested in social change? Maybe a bit of both? What are some primary concerns you have.
  • Taking those concerns you’re then able to start investing in a way that prioritizes those concerns. Whether that’s removing oil companies from your portfolio, or investing in renewable energy. To supporting sustainable fashion companies that are leading the way on environmentally friendly manufacturing without exploiting their workers.
  • Have a process to review, whether you’re using managed funds, your own research or some combination of the two, this is a small but growing movement, there’s continually new ideas and more refined concepts evolving in this space.
  • Make sure you’re considering your own investment goals, a good ethical portfolio balances your principles and values with your financial goals and needs.
